Belly dancers epitomise hypnotic sensuality – a shimmering, shimmying celebration of femininity. But what happens when the dancer’s up the duff? Should they banish the bump or keep on dancing? NAFOURA talks to three dancers about their experiences.
The Thin Blue Line
Ansuya is a second generation belly dancer who started to dance when she was only four years old. Her mother is a belly dancer and is Ansuya’s true inspiration. She is very proud of her mom and still believes that her mother is the most mesmerizing belly dancer. Her mom, Jenaeni, made American Cabaret belly dance popular in the 60’s and 70’s in California and New York.
The Ansuya Experience
Nafoura speaks to Ms White once again to learn about a new venture that she is currently involved with. The project is a collaboration between herself and four other performers - 2 dancers and 2 Musicians, three of whom are authentic Arabic, whom she has known and worked closely with over the years, to set up a brand new dance and live music school in London called RaqsWeMazika (literally translated from Arabic as “Dance And Music”).

The Arab Quarter was set up in May 2009 by Chalf Hassan and Melanie Norman with the clear purpose of providing workshops, performances and CDs of exceptional artistic merit. They met in the late summer of 2008 during Melanie Norman’s first theatrical production Oriental Destiny – Egyptian Dance Unveiled, which was to explore working with mixed media of live music, dance, acting and exotic entertainment.
